PRESS RELEASE 3rd June 2021

Integrated planning and development: GitHub integration into OpenProject

The integration of GitHub into OpenProject facilitates the collaboration of developers by connecting the two applications.

Berlin, June 3 2021 – OpenProject, the leading free and open source project management software, proudly presents a new integration into GitHub, the largest and most advanced development platform in the world. With the integration of GitHub into OpenProject, the planning and specification of a software project is much closer integrated with the development. Any developer or stakeholder can see the overall status of the software development, from project timing, requirements specification, down to the respective pull requests being worked on.
The GitHub integration is launched with the release of OpenProject 11.3.

We develop open source project management software to change the way how people collaborate location-independently on projects that have a positive impact on our daily lives. We provide freedom to the users of OpenProject through free open source software, licensed under GPL v3, and integrated open standards. To make our code available, we are using GitHub, the largest and most advanced code hosting platform for version control and collaboration. Consequently, the decision to develop an integration for GitHub and OpenProject was straight forward and will support our users and us internally with all development efforts.

– Niels Lindenthal, Founder and CEO at OpenProject GmbH

The new GitHub integration in OpenProject is an individual module that will be displayed as a tab in the work package details view. All activities taking place on GitHub that are related to the work package, are listed on its GitHub tab in OpenProject.

The benefits of the integration are:

  • Link from OpenProject to GitHub: whilst you e.g. plan and specify a feature in your project management environment, the new GitHub integration supports you to then create a branch and consequently an pull request in GitHub straight from the work package in OpenProject.

  • Link from GitHub to OpenProject: if you already have an existing pull request in GitHub, you can link it to OpenProject using the work package ID in the GitHub pull request description.

  • Pull request status update: the integration gives you an overview over pull requests associated to a work package. You will see the status of each pull request and which one still needs to be worked on. If you want to continue working on one of the pull requests, the link takes you straight into GitHub to the specific pull request.

  • GitHub actions status update: together with the pull requests, the status of GitHub actions will be displayed in your OpenProject work packages. You will for example see if the test run on your CI performed successfully.

More new features and improvements with OpenProject 11.3

The GitHub OpenProject integration is released with OpenProject 11.3. This release brings a large number of new features, improvements as well as bug fixes. We are especially proud of a significant improvement in the user invitation to projects. Users can easily be added or invited while working on a work package. This makes adding new team members to a project even easier. A new button in the header navigation allows easy creation of projects, users or work packages.
