Accessible project management for everyone
Making project collaboration accessible to everyone.
Discover how OpenProject supports different abilities and ways of working, with accessibility at the heart of our development.
Accessibility is part of our DNA
Inclusive project collaboration from the beginning
Accessibility has been part of OpenProject since its beginnings. In 2012, the initiative to remove accessibility barriers in Redmine became one of the driving forces behind the creation of OpenProject. Making project management accessible to everyone has been a guiding principle ever since.
We believe that everyone should be able to participate in project collaboration, regardless of their abilities or the assistive technologies they use. We continuously improve OpenProject to support different ways of navigating, understanding, and interacting with project information.

Accessibility features that support everyone
Clear and readable interfaces
Light and dark high-contrast modes improve the visibility of text and interface elements. Users can also synchronize their preferred appearance with their operating system.
Keyboard navigation
OpenProject supports keyboard interaction across many workflows, helping users work without relying exclusively on a mouse. Keyboard shortcuts can also be disabled when they interfere with assistive technologies.
Screen reader support
Accessible labels, semantic structures, and announcements of dynamic changes help users interact with project information through screen readers. We continuously improve these capabilities across the application.
Accessibility by design
Built into how we develop OpenProject
Making software accessible requires more than individual features. We consider accessibility throughout the development process, from planning and design to implementation and testing.
We develop OpenProject with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA as our accessibility target. These guidelines help us create interfaces that are more perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.
Our user interfaces increasingly use a reusable design system based on GitHub Primer, helping us create more consistent and accessible components and interaction patterns.
We follow a dedicated accessibility checklist and integrate automated accessibility testing into our development process to identify potential barriers and prevent regressions.

Accessibility is a commitment we put into practice
OpenProject has undergone an independent accessibility assessment commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Home Affairs. Its findings help guide our development priorities.
We have resolved numerous reported issues and continue to address remaining barriers. We recognize that accessibility is an ongoing process rather than a one-time achievement.
As an open source project, we welcome accessibility feedback and contributions. Real-world experiences help us identify barriers and prioritize improvements.
