OKRs only work when goals live where the work happens. Running our OKRs in OpenProject keeps strategy, progress, and day‑to‑day tasks in one place. It means fast check‑ins, clear responsibilities, and better outcomes.

Work management

All in one software

Projets

Plan before you build. Create your project portfolio and handle planning and scheduling. Map phases and milestones on a shared Gantt chart, schedule dependencies across teams, and use versions to sort.

Objectives and Key Results

Define Objectives, measure Key Results, and link them to initiatives and tasks. Add them to your meetings, upload documents and discuss them with colleagues.

Tâches

Create, assign, discuss, and complete tasks with notifications, reminders, and saved views. Use boards, Gantt charts or tables to visualize them in your preferred way. And monitor every change in the Activity tab.

Réunions

Schedule one-time or recurring meetings right in OpenProject, add work packages to the agenda and invite everyone per email. Create meeting outcomes, recurring backlog topics and PDF exports.

Helpdesk

Add requests as tickets, sort them on boards and assign them to colleagues or externals. Set reminders and track your tickets until resolved.

RH

HR tasks are part of the work, so why leave the system for them. Run hiring, onboarding, and recurring HR processes as projects with tasks and templates. Set permissions to private and you’re ready to go.

Temps et coûts

Track time and costs without leaving OpenProject. Log time directly from tasks or boards, set budgets for projects or phases, and compare planned vs. actual resources in simple reports that keep teams and stakeholders aligned.

Documents

Keep project files close to your work. Attach or link documents at project, task, or meeting level, so updates stay in context. Use integrations for Nextcloud, OneDrive or SharePoint to store big files and link them to your work packages.

Wiki, Forum and News

Document guidelines, instructions, and similar information in an OpenProject Wiki. Use the News module to quickly communicate information to all stakeholders and a forum to facilitate discussion on specific topics.

How to use OpenProject for OKR management

OpenProject provides a flexible OKR software approach: you model Strategic Initiatives, Objectives, Key Results, and Tasks as work package types. Link them, and track progress in the same workspace your teams already use.

Create a dedicated OKR project and invite the teams who will own and update goals. Then add work package types such as Strategic Initiative, Objective, Key Result, and Task. We advise to keep standard statuses (e.g., new, in progress, closed) and add OKR-specific statuses like ‘moved to next quarter’ to cleanly carry work forward.

Consider adding simple custom fields (e.g., Confidence level), so owners can signal probability of achievement during the quarter. Group membership helps OKR Masters assign goals to the right team at a glance.

Create Objectives, Key Results and more

Define quarter‑specific Strategic Initiatives and their Objectives; then create associated Key Results (and tasks) and connect them with parent‑child relations. Simply set quarter start/end dates, versions (e.g., Q4 2025), priorities, and descriptions.

If you track effort or progress, populate those fields according to your progress reporting mode. The result: everything a team needs to execute each Key Result is already structured and searchable.

Monitor progress and stay on track

Save filtered work package tables (by team, by quarter, by initiative) for quick reviews. To visualize, you can use parent‑child boards for Objectives with their Key Results. Helpful not only during weekly or bi‑weekly check‑ins.

With the OpenProject Meetings module, you can easily schedule recurring OKR meetings. Add Key Results to the agenda, and record outcomes — everything stays linked to the underlying work and is already documented and traceable. OKR masters and managers can use the project overview page to spot at‑risk Key Results or carry‑overs early.

Break down your work and stay on top of everything

Foire aux questions

OpenProject is an open source software for project management, task management, and many other use cases like OKR management. It brings all your work into one secure, centralized platform.

OpenProject models OKRs using configurable work package types such as Strategic Initiative, Objective, Key Result, and Task. You can connect them with relations and saved views so strategy and day-to-day work stay aligned.

No, you don’t need a dedicated OKR module in OpenProject. Instead, you can set up an OKR project with the types, statuses, versions, and other fields you need. This flexible setup lets you adapt OpenProject to your own OKR framework.

You can structure OKR cycles with versions (for example quarterly planning), add timelines and dependencies, and link Objectives and Key Results to tasks and projects. This ensures planning, execution, and reviews happen in one place.

Yes. OpenProject uses role-based permissions. You can restrict access to specific projects or work package types so only selected teams or roles can view or update certain OKRs.

Absolutely. Multiple teams can work on shared Objectives and Key Results while keeping clear ownership. You can assign a responsible person, change assignees as needed, and involve contributors from different teams without losing accountability.
