OpenProject and XWiki strengthen the European open source alternative to Jira and Confluence
OpenProject 17.6 introduces the first native XWiki integration in OpenProject, bringing project management and enterprise knowledge management even closer together.
Berlin, Germany / Paris, France, July 8, 2026 – OpenProject and XWiki today announced a major milestone in their collaboration with the release of OpenProject 17.6. The new release introduces the first native XWiki integration in OpenProject, allowing organizations to connect project management and enterprise knowledge management more closely than ever before.
Combined with XWiki’s existing OpenProject Integration (Pro) and both platforms’ continuously expanding migration capabilities, the partnership now offers organizations a compelling European open source alternative to the Jira and Confluence stack.

From partnership to product
One year after announcing their strategic partnership, OpenProject and XWiki have transformed a shared vision into practical capabilities that help organizations manage their product development, projects, and knowledge in a connected, sovereign open source environment.
With OpenProject 17.6, users can now create and link XWiki pages directly from work packages, reference documentation in work package descriptions, and see where work packages are referenced across XWiki. Together with secure OAuth authentication, the integration enables teams to navigate seamlessly between project work and enterprise knowledge while respecting existing permissions.
This complements XWiki’s OpenProject Integration (Pro), which enables teams to display and create live OpenProject work packages directly from XWiki pages. Recent enhancements, including advanced filtering and sorting, make it easier to surface the right project information alongside the documentation that supports it.
Together, the integrations create a bidirectional connection between project execution and enterprise knowledge management, reducing context switching, improving traceability, and helping teams keep documentation closely connected to the work it supports.
Lowering the barriers to migration
The partnership extends beyond integrations. Both companies continue to simplify the transition away from proprietary collaboration platforms.
OpenProject’s Jira Migrator supports migrations from Jira Server and Data Center, while XWiki continues to expand its Confluence Migration Toolkit, now supporting 147 Confluence macros natively and many more through custom migration scripts. Recent improvements also increased the migration trial limit from 30 to 200 pages, allowing organizations to validate realistic migration scenarios before committing.
Together, these capabilities make it significantly easier for organizations to replace both Jira and Confluence without leaving valuable projects, documentation, or established ways of working behind.
