Outlook OpenProject 7.0: Multi-select custom fields

We are working hard on finalizing OpenProject 7.0.
Along with many great features, such as the new user-friendly timeline there are also several features that will be available to users of the Enterprise Edition and Cloud Edition.
One of these features are multi-select custom fields.

Custom fields in OpenProject

In OpenProject it is possible to create custom fields in order to add additional attributes for various aspects in OpenProject.
Custom fields exist for example for work packages, projects and users.
These custom fields can represent values of different types, such as lists, boolean values or text fields.

For a more in-depth overview of custom fields take a look at the OpenProject user guide.

Multi-select custom fields

One limitation of custom fields is that only one value can be selected at once.
However, there are several cases in which it is more useful to select multiple values at once (for example for a feature request with a custom field “customers” which multiple customers have asked for).

For this use case the Enterprise and Cloud Edition include an option to enable multi-select custom fields.

Create multi-select custom fields

You can create multi-select custom fields in the administration – the same way you create single-select custom fields.
When you create a work package custom field make sure to select either the format List or User.

Additionally, make sure you select the checkbox Allow multi-select.

Use multi-select custom fields

In order to use a multi-select custom field, make sure the custom field is activated in the project. When you create or edit a work package with a multi-select custom field, you will notice a little plus sign next to the attribute. Click on it to select multiple values and save your changes.

Consequently, you can also filter by multiple values in the work package filters.

Outlook

Multi-select custom fields are just one of the new features included with OpenProject 7.0 for the Enterprise Edition and Cloud Edition.
Additionally, it will be possible to upload a custom logo and to customize the OpenProject theme.

Hi there, will this feature be exclusively available in enterprise and cloud edition?

    1. Robin Wagner says:

      Hi Bernd,

yes, multi-select custom fields will only be available in the Enterprise Edition and Cloud Edition.
There are a lot of additional features included in OpenProject 7.0 which are also available in the Community Edition (such as a new interactive timeline and hierarchies in the work package table).

      Best,
      Robin

That’s a bad joke… What’s the connection of custom multiselects and enterprise usage? You might have a point on LDAP/AD integration because this is in the end a company oriented feature. Custom fields for issues etc. offering multiple selections are not related to company usage. Obvoiusly you try to offer additional value – but 9,95€/user/month is quite a lot of money for LDAP integration so you obviously need additional reasons.

Nevermind, there are true open and free available systems as alternative offering custom multiselect fields as well as an LDAP/AD integration, Redmine for example.

I think you won’t survive in the end because you’re accounting to much for to less additional value.
500 Users using your enterprise version of OpenProject for 1 year (one single one!) equals to 59700 € (JIRA is 19800$ so approx. 17000€ as a one-time payment) – both on-premise.

The difference is (after the first year I may use JIRA as long as I like (so typically 5 to 7 years) but I would have to uninstall your software.

      Hello Jens,

the Enterprise Edition offers many additional features aside from the LDAP/AD integration, such as further customization options
(e.g. custom logo and color theme) and improved security (e.g. 2 factor authentication).
You can find an overview of the included premium features on https://www.openproject.org/enterprise-edition/#premium-features.

OpenProject is available as a free version through the Community Edition. Both the Community Edition and the Enterprise Edition are open source.
The Enterprise Edition is an important way to fund the future development of OpenProject. In fact, a significant portion of the revenue generated
through the Enterprise Edition is used for developing features for the free Community Edition.

Regarding the pricing: We reduced the price to 5,95 € / user / month. You only pay for the first 200 users. The maximum price is therefore 14,280 € (for as many users as you like).
Aside from premium features, the Enterprise Edition also includes our professional support. Therefore, the price is recurring. (In the case of Jira, the support is only valid for the duration of 12 months.)

You also don’t have to uninstall OpenProject if you chose the Enterprise Edition and then decide to not extend your Enterprise license. In this case you can continue to work with your OpenProject environment
but it will be downgraded to the Community Edition. This means you can continue to work with your data but the premium features (and support) are no longer available.

      Best,
      Robin
